Publisher : N.A. Dear Parents, In a move to keep you posted on what resource materials we have in our Resource Center, especially when we acquire a new book, DSA will release a book review every month. Relative to this, we have a new book entitled “MENTAL WELLNESS IN ADULTS WITH DOWN SYNDROME: A Guide to Emotional and Behavioral Strengths and Challenges” authored by Dennis McGuire, Ph.D. & Brian Chicoine, M.D. They describes the book as “upbeat, thoroughly readable guide, providing parents, mental health professionals, teachers, and caregivers the keys to understanding how to promote mental wellness and resolve psychological problems in people with Down syndrome.“ The book aims to identify and single out the common behavioral characteristics of Down syndrome from other mental illnesses and what specific mental health problems occur more commonly in people with Down syndrome. The authors of the book describe the “problem signs, the diagnostic process, and a range of treatment options, such as counseling, behavioral therapy, and medication.” The authors of this book are considered experts in adults with Down syndrome. Both founded the Center of Lutheran General Hospital in suburban Chicago. Dennis Mcguire, Ph.D. is the Director of Psychosocial Services and Brian Chicoine, M.D. is the medical director of the Adult Down Syndrome Center. They have been in practice for 29 years and 30 years, respectively in the field of person with intellectual disabilities. You can check out the book at our Resource Center in Junction 8, Bishan. We only have only one copy of the book so it will be on a first come first serve basis. For more information, please contact either myself or Linda at 6255 6112 RONALD CASTRO, RSW |
